Hilda Marie, daughter of Henry and Anna (Kuhl) Jansen, was born October 19, 1917, in Iowa Township, Crawford County, Iowa. She attended rural school near her home and then attended Manning High School. Hilda was in a terrible automobile accident as a teenager in which her back was broken.

On March 10, 1938, Hilda was united in marriage with Averill Oren Vinke at the Lutheran Parsonage in Denison. Four children were born to this union. Hilda and Averill farmed near Botna, Manilla, Gray, and then Westside. Hilda was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church near Audubon and she and Averill were confirmed in 1965 by Reverend Hattendorf, also at Trinity Lutheran Church. After retiring from farming in 1977, they continued to live on the farm until 1992 when they moved to Denison.

Hilda was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Arcadia. She enjoyed fishing, traveling and her flowers and garden. Every spring she would plant new flowers to add to the numerous perennials that already existed. Her indoor plants also thrived, including a Christmas cactus her mother started over 100 years ago. She preserved her garden produce and shared that with others. She also enjoyed sharing her favorite recipes that could never be found in any cookbooks with family and friends. Most folks fondly remember Hilda with a dog by her side.

Several years after moving to Denison, Averill’s health began to fail and he entered the nursing home and died on October 29, 1999. After the death of her husband, Hilda continued to live in their home in Denison until the spring of 2002 when she became a resident of the Denison Care Center. She died there on Wednesday, February 5, 2003, at the age of 85 years, 3 months and 17 days.

Preceding Hilda in death are her husband; parents; son Dennis, in infancy; brother, Harry Jansen and two sisters Augusta Georgius and Emma Steffen.

She is survived by two sons Adrain Vinke and wife Joan of Woodland Park, CO, and Gerald Vinke of Morehead City, NC; one daughter Jeanine Vinke of Denison; four grandsons: David Vinke and wife Rachel of Ferndale, WA; Douglas Vinke and wife Michelle of Lawrence, KS; Brent Vinke and wife Samantha of Lawrenceville, GA; and Bradley Vinke and wife Ashlie of Pensacola, FL; 11 great-grandchildren; brother Alvin Jansen and wife Clariss of Aspinwall; sister-in-law Irene Jansen of Manning; in-laws Lois and husband Floyd Drake of Audubon; Laverne and husband Pete Petersen of Mason City and Loretta Vinke and Odessa Vinke, both of Manning; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
