Herman Jens John Sonksen, son of Jens and Dorthea (Asmus) Sonksen, was born on May 9, 1915, in Douglas Township, Audubon County, Iowa. He was baptized on May 26, 1915, and confirmed in Lincoln Township, Audubon, Iowa. He was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Lake View, Iowa.
On January 24, 1940, Herman was united in marriage with Gladys Bernice Asmus at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Lincoln Township, Audubon County. They farmed one year in Audubon County, then moved to a farm three miles out of Manning, farming there for 24 years. In 1965 they moved to town, where Herman began his own carpentry business. In November of 1972, they moved to Early, Iowa, with his carpentry crew. Herman sold his business to Early Builders in 1975 but continued to do carpentry work for several years. He then started his hobby of woodcarving.
