Herman Christian Schroeder was born on July 4, 1880, at Goose Lake, in western Iowa. As a small child he moved to Crawford County where he received his education and grew to manhood. He then spent several years at Payette, Idaho before coming to Moody County in 1910. He was united in marriage to Mamie Hammer on December 27, 1911, at Flandreau. He farmed here for one year and then moved to Manning, Iowa, for a year before returning to Moody County in 1913. He farmed west of Flandreau until he retired in 1946 and moved to Flandreau.

He is survived by his wife Mamie: one daughter, Florence, Mrs. Edward Mengenhauser of Flandreau; one brother, Johanns Schroeder of Denison, Iowa; one sister, Mrs. Irving Stombaugh of Egan; 5 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and four brothers.
