Herbert Gustav, son of Hans William and Margaret Martens Witt, was born August 10, 1906, on the family farm south of Arcadia, Iowa. He was the fourth of five children. He was baptized September 22, 1906, in Arcadia. His family farmed near Arcadia and when he was yet a young lad, his parents moved the family to a farm 3 1/2 miles north of Manning. Herb attended country school through the 8th grade. He began high school and had to quit because he was needed at home to help with the farming. Herb was confirmed to Zion Lutheran Church in Manning in 1925. He always made religion a very important part of his life.
Herb met Beulah M. Orme through some friends, and on February 3, 1945, they were united in marriage in Buelah's hometown of Neola, Iowa. Three children were born to this union. They made their first home south of Manning for about a year and then bought a farm just west of Manning.
Herb was forced to retire about 1970, when he underwent hip surgery. Herb and Beulah enjoyed retirement, as they were able to travel and spend time with their grandchildren. Herb was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Manning.
As Herb's health began to fail, he became a resident of the Manning Plaza in August of 1995. He died there on Thursday, September 14, 2000 at the age of 94 years, 1 month, and 4 days.
Besides his parents, Herb is preceded in death by a son Dennis Witt, two brothers Arnold Witt and Erwin Witt and two sisters Regilda Witt and Edna Witt.
