On Wednesday evening July 3, Herbert and his friend Homer Weems drove to Manilla and, according to reports, when within about a mile of Manilla they met a car driven by Emil Ehlers, who was going home. The glaring lights of the cars blinded the drivers to such an extent that they misjudged the distance and met in a head-on collision. The accident occurred near the Claus Thompson corner, both cars were badly damaged. The car in which Herbert and his companion were riding was thrown over into the ditch burying Herbert under the wreckage. He was so badly injured that he was hurried to the Wyatt hospital, but he passed away Thursday evening July 4, 1929, at 5:50 o'clock without regaining consciousness. His skull was fractured and badly injured on the forehead. The others in the wreck escaped with slight bruises.
