HERBERT SCHROEDER

Funeral services for Herbert Schroeder were held Tuesday, March 24, 1987, at 2:00 p.m. at Ohde Funeral Home in Manning. Pastor Randy Ross of First Presbyterian Church in Manning officiated the service.

Music was provided by Judy Joens and Ray Pratt, vocalists, and Connie Siepker, organist. Interment was in the Manning City Cemetery with Leonard Petersen, Robert Wegner, Burdette Schroeder, Gerald Schroeder, Harold Schroeder, and Duane Wegner serving as casketbearers. Honorary casketbearers were Marvin Hansen, Tony Venner, Hugo P.G. Jahn, Harold Voege, Willis Puck, and Walter Riesselman.

Herbert, son of August and Caroline (Tank) Schroeder, was born September 29, 1903, in Crawford County, Iowa. He attended rural school near his home.

October 6, 1926, he was united in marriage with Leona Grimm of Manning. Three children, Wayne, Marilyn, and Cleone, were born to this union. Herb worked his entire life as a farm hand in the Manning and Westside areas. In 1970 Herb and Leona purchased a home in Manning where they spent their remaining years. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1976.

Herb was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Manning and a member of Hayes Township Schuetzen Verein.

After the death of his wife in August of 1979, Herb continued to live in his home in Manning until June of 1986 when, after an illness, he moved Into the Manning Plaza. He entered the Manning General Hospital, Manning, Iowa, on February 25th where he remained a patient until his death there Saturday, March 21, 1987 at the age of 83 years, 5 months, and 21 days. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; by a son-in-law, Frederick Podey, by two sisters, Clara Petersen, and Alma Meyer; and by four brothers: Willie, Harry, Albert, and George Schroeder.

Herb is survived by his children: Wayne Schroeder and his wife, Lila, of Manning; Marilyn and her husband, Dale Jons, of Westside; and Cleone Podey, of Denison; by 12 grandchildren; by 19 great-grandchildren; by one brother, Otto Schroeder, of Manning; by two sisters, Hilda Karstens and Lolida Wegner, both of Manning; and, by nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends.
