Herbert H., son of Herman and Katie (Karsten) Rowedder, was born at home on January 23, 1906, in Crawford County, Iowa. Herb was baptized on July 1, 1906, at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. He lived with his family on farms around the Manning area in Crawford County and attended country school through the seventh grade. Herb then remained at home to help his family with the duties of farming for a number of years.

Herb was confirmed on February 20, 1927, at Zion Lutheran Church, and on May 22, 1935, he was united in marriage with his childhood friend, Edna Meggers, also at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. Three children were born to this union. Herb and Edna lived on various farms as employment came about for Herb. Herb worked as a carpenter, made wagon boxes at Dultmeier Manufacturing, helped with the railroad, drove gas truck for Ehrich’s Garage in Aspinwall, and eventually became a mechanic for Struve Motors in Manning for 25 years. They moved into Manning before Herb retired in 1973. Edna died February 2, 1982. He then sold their home and lived in Elm Crest Apartments until he became a resident of the Manning Plaza Nursing Home on February 14, 1997.

Herb enjoyed traveling to Arizona to spend time with family, and watching the Iowa Hawkeyes and Kansas City Chiefs and Royals.

On Monday, November 8, 1999, Herb died at Manning Regional Healthcare Center in Manning reaching the age of 93 years, 9 months and 16 days.

Besides his parents and wife, Herb is preceded in death by a sister Emma Rowedder, and a brother-in-law Lewis Anthony.

Herb is survived by three children: Daryle Rowedder and his wife Beverly of Manning; Myrene and her husband Don Vaudt of Ottumwa; and Gary Rowedder and his wife Pam of Mesa, Arizona; seven grandchildren: Tim and Julie Rowedder; Shari Benson; Sharla Mozer; Shelley Clayton; Brian and Janell Rowedder; seven great-grandchildren; a sister Elsie Anthony of Denison; a brother Ivan Rowedder and his wife Norma of Schleswig; and by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
