Herbert John, son of Herman and Laura (Voege) Mahnke, was born north of Arcadia, Iowa, on February 26, 1913. The family moved near Manning when he was a toddler, and he attended Iowa Township No. 2 and other country schools in the Manning area.

After completing the eighth grade, Herb began farming with his father northwest of Manning. He continued farming with his brothers. Herb was united in marriage with Inez Stoelk on September 19, 1940, at Rev. Ansorge's Lutheran parsonage in Manning. Six children were born to this union. The couple lived with Herb's parents for a year, then bought a farm northwest of Aspinwall where they farmed for nearly 60 years. Herb kept occupied with his row crops and various livestock. Herb and Inez moved to Manning in 1998, but he always kept track of the work out at the farm.

Herb was baptized in Arcadia and was a long time member of Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. He was a faithful Christian who enjoyed being surrounded by his family and friends. He was a farmer through and through and for him it was a way of life.

On December 29, 2006, Herb died at St. Anthony Hospital in Carroll, Iowa, at the age of 93 years, 10 months and 3 days.

Preceding Herb in death are his parents; son Glen Mahnke; and brothers Alfred, Leonard, Raymond and William Mahnke.
