OLD TIMER PASSES AWAY

In the death of Henry Vinke, Manning loses an old and respected citizen. He was born in Schoenberg, Probstei, Schleswig Holstein, Germany on November 17th, 1846. He emigrated to America in 1865, and came Deep Rock, Clinton County, Iowa. Here he worked for several years. During this time he met and married Miss Caroline Sperling.

On February 11th, 1873, together with Henry Goettsch and Jochim Kruse this couple came west in the old fashioned prairie schooner and settled near the Five Mile House. Later they purchased the homestead on which they lived until they retired and moved to Manning. Nine children were born to this union, two pre-deceased their father, Harry Jr., who died at the age of 29 years while on the homestead, and Julius who died in France while on active service in defense of his country.

The deceased's end came rather suddenly, passing away on Tuesday morning, March 6th, 1923, at the ripe old age of 76 years, 3 months and 17 days. He leaves to mourn him, his dear wife, seven children; Gus, now on the homestead; John of Manning: Mrs. Ed Grimm, of Manning; Dethlef, northwest of town; Mrs. Charles Welsh, of Omaha: Mrs. Dethlef Martens and Mrs. Charles Thiedeman; also 31 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren; also a brother, Pete Vinke, Clinton County and a sister, Mrs. Henry Ewoldt of Manning. Other two sisters died some time ago.

Funeral services were held in the Methodist Church, March 10th, conducted by the Rev. H. Coates, after which the remains were interred in the local Manning Cemetery.
