Manning, Iowa, March 13, 1900
Henry Vehrs, a farm hand, who resides about a mile east of here, was run down
and killed by a freight train on the C. M. & St. P. Railroad just east of
the incorporation limits. The body was so badly mutilated that an identification would have been impossible had it not been
for the clothing worn by him. County Coroner Patty of Carroll, held an inquest,
and the jury impaneled returned a verdict that he came to his death by being
run down by a train. The responsibility is not fixed upon any one. Mr. Vehrs was
returning from a ball and it is generally believed he had been drinking
heavily. A small amount of money was found on his person.
