Henry Sievers

Henry Sievers was born in Holstein, Germany, February 16, 1846, and died at his home in Manning, Iowa, Wednesday, October 6th, 1926, at the age of 80 years, 7 months, and 20 days.

Mr. Sievers was a well-educated man having completed his schooling in Germany and after coming to the U.S. in 1865, studied a year in the public schools in Davenport, Iowa. He taught school in Germany one year before coming to America, one year in Davenport, Iowa, and for several years taught German in Manning public schools.

He was instructed in the doctrine of the Lutheran Church in Germany and there confirmed at the age of 14 years.

He has held many public offices in the county and township, and for forty-one years has been secretary for the Home Mutual Insurance Association of Carroll County. Being a well-informed man his advice in legal matters, etc., was often sought by many of his countrymen.

On December 6, 1867, he married Miss Margaretta Hoffmann at Davenport, Iowa. In that same year they moved to Plain View, Scott County, Iowa, where he taught school for twelve years. In 1879 they came to Crawford County where they lived on a farm until 1898 when they moved to Manning where they have since made their home.

He was the father of six children who are: Miss Adeline, Manning, Iowa; Mrs. Bertha Wunder, Dolan, South Dakota; Mrs. Laura Jahn, and Mr. Henry Sievers, Jr., West Side, Iowa; Mrs. Louise Wunder, and Miss Adelia of Manning, Iowa; all of whom with his aged wife, nine grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren survive him. He had one brother, George, who died in Holstein, Germany, in 1910.

His death was caused by hardening of the arteries, followed by a stroke.

The family has the sympathy of the community in the loss of their loved one who has been so long a time among them.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. E.E. Zimmerman in the Presbyterian Church, Saturday afternoon. The body was laid to rest in the Manning Cemetery.
