Pioneer Business Man Dies At 84
Funeral services for Henry Rohr, pioneer Manning business man will be held this afternoon at Zion Lutheran Church with Rev. J.M. Ansorge in charge.
Mr. Rohr, an early resident of this community was manager of the Green Bay Lumber Company for nearly forty years before his retirement. Before that time operated a shoe repair shop and was a sewing machine agent.
Mr. Rohr passed away on his 84th birthday, Monday, July 21, 1941, at the Wyatt Memorial hospital where he had been a patient for some time. He suffered a stroke April 3 and was taken to the hospital where he had several strokes prior to the one which resulted in his death. Until his illness, Mr. Rohr had been in good health.
The deceased was born in Bredstedt, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany on July 21, 1857. As a young man he came to the United States and settled in Ohio. In 1881 he came to Iowa and lived at Irwin, moving to Manning in 1885 where he established the town's first shoe repair shop.
He was manager of the Green Bay Yard from 1889 until 1932 when he was pensioned.
The deceased was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at his hometown in Germany. While in his native land he served three years in the army.
In 1882 he was married to Anna Kelting. Seven children were born to this union, five having died in infancy. Mrs. Rohr passed away in 1894.
February 16, 1895, he was married to Maria (Sonksen) Simon here, who with the following children survive: Mrs. Ernest Kuhn (Wilhelmina), Mrs. Alfred Kuhl (Jessie), Karl B. Rohr, Mrs. H.C. Pahde (Alma), Mrs. Lester Rowedder (Elsa), all of Manning; Mrs. Helmuth Wenzel (Frieda), Irwin; Miss Martha Rohr, Iowa City; Mrs. Victor Schultz (Helene), Lytton; Henry Rohr Jr., Jefferson; Mrs. Marion Lund (Lucia), Denison.
Mr. Rohr was the last of a family of six children. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church.
Della and Maria, two daughters preceded their father in death.
Twenty-three grandchildren also survive.
Interment will be at the Manning cemetery. Pallbearers will be Emil Kuhn, Leon Hass, Albert Juels, John E. Reetz; Jacob Fielweber, Henry G. Martens.
Manning business places will be closed during services this afternoon.
