Henry Mundt Is 90 Today
1849 - 1943
Henry Mundt, one of our oldest and most highly respected citizens celebrates his 90th birthday today, Thursday, March 30, at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Albert Puck on Third Street, where Mr. Mundt is enjoying the eve of life to his heart's content, and in good health. Open house is being
observed in his honor, for relatives and friends to call and spend a social hour.
Mr. Mundt is the father of Mrs. Amanda Puck.
Born in Stakendorf, in the Probstei in Holstein, Germany, March 30, 1849, Mr. Mundt spent his boyhood in his native country. He came to America at the age of 19 years, in 1868, settling near Davenport, Iowa, where he worked on the farm.
Joachim Mundt, father of James Mundt of Manning, and brother of our honored friend, left the Davenport community in 1867, moving to Westside, Crawford County, Iowa in which vicinity he purchased a fine 160 acres of land, which is still in possession of the family. Henry Mundt followed his brother west the next year and assisted him in farming. Soon after he bought a farm adjoining that of his brother. On this farm he spent the greater part of his life, reared a splendid family and enjoyed the esteem of his neighbors and friends.
In the pioneer days when settlements and houses were far and few between, Mr. Mundt held among these young settlers the reputation of being one of the most reliable, helpful and trust-worthy citizens who, in many in-stances, were called upon when privation and poverty were noticeable, and many a family found comfort through his wise council and aid. "He was a friend in need."
Mr. Mundt is enjoying good health and his mind is keen and as clear as that of a much younger person. And in relating his pioneer day experiences one finds many interesting and sometimes amusing incidents.
It is the sincere wish of his many friends that he will enjoy many more birthdays in good health.
