Henry Johannes Schmidt was born on the 24th day of July, in the year 1899. He was born in Iowa Township in Crawford County.
He was married to Miss Mamie Oppermann on the 9th day of January in the year 1924. To this union there were born four children: three boys and one girl (one boy died 9 years ago in very early infancy). His wife is left to mourn him and the names of the surviving children are: Harold age 7 years, Glen age 3 years, Ruth Margaret three weeks old.
Besides his wife and three little children, Henry is mourned deeply by his father and his mother, Hannes and Helena Schmidt. There are also two brothers and two sisters whose names are: Chris Schmidt, Emil Schmidt, Rose (Mrs. Albert Puck), Helen (Mrs. Edward Grimm). One brother, Hannes, died at the age of 24, some 9 years ago.
The father and mother in law, Mr. and Mrs. William Oppermann, together with the following brothers and sisters in law: Mr. and Mrs. Emil Oppermann Mr. and Mrs. Fred Ranniger, Mr. Rudolph Oppermann, Mr. Albert Puck, Mr. Edward Grimm. Mrs. Emil Schmidt also mourns him.
Before coming to the farm he was employed for 5 years at the Dultmeier Factory, and there acquitted himself well.
Henry plowed the field on Friday and that afternoon he was taken ill and at once consulted a physician. On Sunday night his condition grew rapidly worse and the doctor was called, but nothing could be done to save his life, and at 6:15 in the evening of Sunday, May the 6th he passed peacefully away.
He will be much missed by his wife, his little children, his father and mother, brothers and sisters, and all who knew him. He was a man of fine spirit and of splendid character, and the whole community mourns most deeply loss of this good young man.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Ohde Funeral Home, Rev. E.J. Hough officiating. Burial was made in the Manning Cemetery.
Acting as pall bearers were Walter Miller, Julius Ohrt, George Kuhse, Herman Meyer, Freddie Hansen, and Fred Jensen.
We desire to extend our sincerest thanks to all neighbors and friends for their kind assistance and sympathy show us during the illness and death of our beloved husband, father, son, and brother. Also do we wish to extend our thanks to the Rev. Hough far his kind and consoling words, to the choir for the music and for the many beautiful floral offerings. These deeds of kindness came to us as testimonials of love and the high esteem in which he was held by those who knew him best.
