Henry Martens
Henry Martens, son of Detlef and Caroline (Ehlers) Martens, was born on May 10, 1881, in Washington Township. He remained at home until the age of seventeen, then farmed for three years. He was then engaged in the mercantile business in Manning with his brother William, and later operated a newsstand.

Henry & Bertha Martens observed their 50th wedding anniversary on February 20, 1957, by holding open house at the Fireman's Hall. Mr. and Mrs. Martens were married by the Lutheran pastor, John M. Ansorge at the home of the bride's parents.

The funeral service for Henry G. Martens, 82, retired Manning businessman, will be at 2 p.m. Monday, January 13, 1964, at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning, with burial in the Manning Cemetery. Pastor G.C. Hattendorf will officiate. Nephews will serve as pallbearers.

Mr. Martens died unexpectedly Thursday evening, January 9, 1964, at his home.

He was born May 10, 1831, in Washington Township, the son of Detlef and Lena (Ehlers) Martens, and as a young boy moved into Manning. He started work in a grocery store before going into partnership with his brother William in Martens Mercantile Co. In 1937, he began to operate a news stand and soda fountain. He retired in 1954.

He was preceded in death by a son Edwin in 1937; four brothers, William, John, Detlef, and Pete, and two sisters, Mrs. Maggie Witt and Anina Martens.

He is survived by his wife and one son, Orville.
