Henry F. Schroeder, Sr., of Egan, South Dakota, died in the Flandreau hospital last Friday morning after entering the hospital just four days before.
Occasion of his entering the hospital was a fall at his home which resulted in a broken arm. Schroeder would have been 94 years old next month.
Schroeder was born in Gottesgabe, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, on October 13, 1855. When a young man of 17, he came to the United States. He went directly to Clinton County, Iowa. Here he met and married Anna Schroeder who had also come as a young girl from Germany. They were married September 13, 1878. They later moved to a farm near Manning, Iowa. In 1910 they retired to Manning. In 1918 they moved to Egan.
On August 29, 1939, Schroeder suffered the loss of his wife, who died of shock as the result of a fall which caused a broken hip.
Mr. and Mrs. Schroeder were fortunate enough to be able to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary in 1938.
The Schroeders were the parents of nine children. They are Herman and August of Flandreau; Louie, Henry and Mrs. Irving (Emma) Stombaugh, Egan; Mrs. John (Augusta) Vinke, Mrs. Herman (Elfreda) Jahn, and Johannes of Manning, Iowa. One son, Frederic, gave his life during the first World War.
There are also twenty four grandchildren, forty seven great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Not until a son, Robert Henry, was born in March to Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Schroeder at Arcadia, Iowa, was there a great grandson to carry on the Schroeder name.
Had Mr. Schroeder's entire family been able to assemble at one time, the group would have numbered one hundred and twelve.
The body was taken to Manning, Iowa, Saturday
by the Orverahl funeral service. Services were held
there Monday. He was laid to rest beside the remains of his wife and parents,
at the Hayes Township Cemetery. He was preceeded in
death by his wife, his son, Frederic, and an only sister, Mrs. Sophia Ewoldt of Manning.
Note: Sophia (Schroeder) married Henry C. Ewoldt.
