Funeral services for Helen Martha Smith were held on Saturday, February 17 at 2 p.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in
Manning. Pastor Edward F. Heinicke officiated with burial in the Manning Cemetery. Organist was Dorothy Kusel.
Nephews served as pallbearers.
Helen Martha Smith 64, the daughter of John and Martha (Wenzel) Asmus, was born on August 13, 1908, near Manning.
She attended rural schools near her home, later the Manning school and graduated from Manning High School in 1926.
Helen was married to Leo Smith in 1934 after which they lived for one year in Manning. They moved to Jefferson
and returned to Manning to live in 1969. She had been in failing health for the past 25 years, confined to a wheel
chair the past three years and died at the Manning General Hospital on Thursday, February 15, 1973. Helen was a
member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Manning.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister in infancy. Survivors include her husband Leo, one
son, James Smith of Williams Air Force Base in Arizona, three grandchildren; the following sisters: Mrs. Herman
(Lydia) Musfeldt, Mrs. Marie Brady, Mrs. Don (Verna) Brady and Mrs. Paul (Alma) Vollmer, all of Manning and one
brother, Merlin Asmus of Palmerstor North, New Zealand.
Ohde Funeral Home of Manning was in charge of arrangements.
Helen Smith is buried in the Manning City Cemetery.
