Former Resident Dies In California

Mrs. Arthur W. Shepherd nee Helen Franke passed away in her home at San Diego, California on Saturday, January 13, 1940.

Mrs. Shepherd was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gustav Franke Sr. She graduated from the Manning Schools in 1904, and later Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa. She taught school around Manning for several years before to California, twenty-four years ago.

Helen, as she was known to us, will be remembered as a girl with beauty and charm, and a sweet disposition, always, greeting you with a smile. She had many friends in this community as well as in her own who have always had a great admiration for her and by whom she will be greatly missed.

Her sister, Mrs. Alva Jensen, of Spencer, Iowa, was with here during the last five weeks of her illness.

The following poem was read at her funeral which was written by her sister, Dorothy a few hours before the services.

Helen, sweet
With whom beauty had her way
To whom starlit night
And dewy violets
Lent their silent rhythm
Though you walk through
The valley of the shadow
To brighter fields and sunny meadows
Yet with us you walk
And with Him.

Helen was a faithful member of the Brooklyn Heights Presbyterian Church.

She leaves to mourn her passing: her husband, Arthur Shepherd; two sons, John W. and Robert A. Shepherd; four sisters, Mrs. Alma Freelove, Chicago, Illinois; Mrs. Alva Jenson, Spencer, Iowa; Mrs. Amanda Schroeder and Miss Dorothy Franke, San Diego, and a brother, Colonel Gustav H. Franke, Ft. Clayton, Canal Zone.

Our deepest sympathy is extended to the family.
