Helen, daughter of William and Emma (Nagel) Wegner, was born February 27, 1912, on a farm near Aspinwall, Iowa. She was the youngest of seven children. Helen attended country school near her home and completed her education at Manning High School, graduating with the Class of 1929. On December 12, 1936, Helen was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning.

Helen taught country school for several years. While out dancing with friends, Helen met William Clarence Petersen and on July 11, 1942, they were united in marriage at Neosho, Missouri. One daughter was born to this union. After her daughter was a bit older, Helen worked in the dry goods department of J. M. McDonald then Johnson's Department Store in Manning for many years. Helen continued as a member of Zion Lutheran Church throughout her life and was active in Ladies Guild and Braille work at church. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and the Manning Hospital and Plaza Auxiliary. She enjoyed visiting with family and friends, caring for her flowers, playing cards and listening to music.

Her husband Bill died on February 1, 1976. Helen continued to live in their home until she could no longer live alone and became a resident of the Manning Plaza Nursing Home. She died there on Tuesday, February 10, 2009, at the age of 96 years, 11 months and 14 days.

Preceding her in death are her parents and siblings: Elsie Schrum (Gus); Louie Wegner; Mamie Janssen (Gerd); Eddie Wegner; Milda Peters (George) and Henry 'Mike' Wegner.

Helen is survived by her daughter Kay and husband Bill Kiser of Aurora, Co; two grandchildren T. J. Ogden of Cheyenne, WY and Katie Ogden of Reno, NV; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
