Helen Miller

Funeral services for Helen Miller were held Saturday, January 4, 1992, at 10:30 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Manning, Iowa. Pastor Robert Riggert officiated the service with Paula Weiss as organist. Interment was held in Nishnabotna Cemetery, Manilla, Iowa, with Holly Wall, Linda Beck, Deana Boatwright, Gleeanna Kator, Debra Miller and Theresa Viggers as casketbearers. Honorary casketbearers were Keith Miller, John Miller, Leo Miller, and Joseph Miller.

Helen, daughter of Gus and Bertha Opperman Vehrs, was born July 25, 1911 at Manning, Iowa. She was educated in the Manning schools.

On February 17, 1932, Helen was united in marriage with Louie C.H. Miller. Four sons: Marvin, John, Leo, and Ray, were born to this union. Helen and her husband farmed near Manilla for 10 years and then moved to Denison. In 1976 Helen's husband died and that same year she moved to Manning. For the past two years she had been a resident of the Manning Plaza Nursing Home.

Helen suffered a heart attack and was taken to the Manning General Hospital where she died on Wednesday morning, January 1, 1992, at the age of 80 years, 5 months, and 7 days.

Besides her husband, Helen was preceded in death by her parents; by two sons, Marvin, who died when he was 15 years old, and Leo, who died in 1991; by a grandson; by a sister, Margaret Wegner; and by three brothers: Edward, Pete, and Herb Vehrs.

Survivors include two sons: John Miller of Des Moines and Ray Miller and his wife, Gail, of Williamsburg, New Mexico; 10 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren: two sisters: Vi Jensen, of Audubon and Verna Oberts, of Moline, Illinois; a brother, Harold Vehrs, of Manning; nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.

Helen was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Manning and of the Lutheran Ladies Guild. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla. Helen kept active by crocheting and making afghans.
