Hazel, daughter of William and Rena (Cory) Gessmann, was born January 14, 1921, near Manilla, Iowa. She attended rural schools through the fourth grade and then Manilla Community School, graduating with the Manilla High School Class of 1939.

Hazel taught in Nishnabotna Township Country School Number 9 for two years. She was employed by the Thrifty Food Store in Manning from 1943 until shortly before her marriage in 1945. On January 14, of that year she was united in marriage with William O. Volquartsen at Hot Springs, Arkansas. Three daughters, Dianna, Darlene, and Doris, were born to this union.

Hazel spent most of her married life in Manning where she again worked for the Thrifty Food Store for many years. She also worked for a short time in a grocery store for Paul Volquartsen. Five years ago Hazel retired from her job at Thrifty Food.

Hazel had been in failing health but still maintained her own home. She died there unexpectedly on Friday evening, January 18, 1991, at the age of 70 years and 4 days.

She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.

Survivors include her daughters: Dianna and her husband, Larry Kastner, of Charter Oak; Darlene and her husband, John Rasmussen, of Manilla; and Doris and her husband, Rex Sebeniecher, of Stanton; nine grandchildren; four sisters: Marjorie Smith of Odeboldt; Mildred and her husband, Robert McLaren, of Manilla; Thelma and her husband, Norman Hanssen, of Grand Island, Nebraska; and Evelyn and her husband, Phillip Wenzel, of Westside; a brother, William Gessmann and his wife, Dorothy, of Denison; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
