Virgil Pioneer Dies at Huron
Harvey Opperman of Virgil, S.D. dies Tuesday afternoon at St. John's Hospital at the age of 86. The funeral service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Walter Funeral Home with the Rev. Everett Hawbaker of the Bible Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Garden.
Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday afternoon or evening.
Opperman was born Dec. 1, 1877, in Clinton, Iowa, the son of Claus and Margaretha Opperman. He came to South Dakota with his brother William and farmed northeast of Virgil. In 1914 he married Emma Kuehl and had lived in the Virgil area since. The Opperman's celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Feb. 11, 1964.
He is survived by his widow, Emma, Virgil, S.D.; two daughters, Norma, Mrs. John Brenner Jr., rural Huron, S.D.; Alma, Mrs. Edward Peterson, Wolsey; one son Alvin, Huron; eight grand-children and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and three sisters.
