Aspinwall Man Takes Own Life Last Sunday
Friends and neighbors of Harry J. Wunder, well known farmer living north of Aspinwall, were shocked and grieved to learn he had taken his own life on Sunday morning, August 23.
About five years ago the Wunders suffered a severe fire loss on their farm and it was during the process of rebuilding that Mr. Wunder fell and sustained injuries to his head from which he never fully recovered. On the Saturday previous to his death he had consulted a doctor who had recommended going to Rochester, Minnesota, for examination and treatment, which Mr. and Mrs. Wunder were making preparations to do. It is believed that worry and despair over his condition prompted the rash act that resulted in his death.
Mr. Wunder was an industrious and prosperous farmer and was held in high esteem by all who knew him.
Harry J. Wunder, son of John and Minnie Wunder, was born May 5th, 1891, on the farm in Iowa township where his death occurred Sunday morning at 6:15 a. m., August 23, 1936, at the age of 45 years, 3 months, and 18 days.
He was baptized in the Lutheran faith at an early age and was a member of that church until the end. He obtained his education in the country schools of that community, after which he assisted his father in the operation of the farm, later taking over his father's interests.
He was united in marriage to Amanda Tallgard at Manilla on February 23, 1916. There were no children born to this union.
He is survived and mourned by his wife and aged mother, Mrs. Minnie Wunder, of Manning, besides a number of nieces and nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his father, who died a number of years ago, a twin brother, John, at the age of 1 1/2 years, and a sister, Mrs. Ed Paesler, of
Manning, who was buried about ten days ago.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon from the Lutheran church at Manning with Pastor John M. Ansorge conducting the services. Interment
was made in the Manning Cemetery.
Pall bearers were Fred Stammer, William Anthony, Walter Ossenkop, Henry Anthony, Carl Kuhl, and W.J. Kruse.
Out-of-town relatives and friends attending the services included Lewis Tollgard, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Tollgard, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Johnston of Fandreau, South Dakota; Mrs. Carl Swartz Springfield, Minnesota; Herman and Pete Stoltenberg of Davenport; Mr. and Mrs. John Martin Jr. and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. E.D. Hamann, Leona Hamann and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Harmsen, all of Persia; Herman and Frank Wunder of Minnesota; Mr. and Mrs. H.C. Dirky and daughter of Wall Lake and Mr. and Peter Jacobson of Avoca.
Mr. Wunder accidentally fell about five years ago, from which serious injuries to his vertebra resulted and from which he never fully recovered. At times the suffering caused temporary mental derangement. Mrs. Wunder and other relatives had taken the matter under advisement and it was decided to take him to the state hospital in Iowa City for treatments. But, before this was accomplished he passed away, leaving his grief stricken wife, his mother, Mrs. Minnie Wunder of Manning, his wife's parents Mr. and Mrs. Louie Tollgaard of Flandrau, South Dakota and many other relatives to, mourn his death.
The deceased was married to Miss Amanda Tallgaard on February 23, 1916, and they have lived on the home place since. In 1931, their farm building, with the exception of the house, a barn and a shed, burned to the ground. They lost their car, machinery and considerable livestock, grain arid feed.
Mr. Wunder was one of our progressive and prosperous young farmers an honest and upright man and a loving husband and a kind neighbor. His many friends sorrowfully extend their deepest sympathy to the. grieve stricken were and to his aged mother.
