Harold Vehrs
A memorial service for Harold Vehrs, 81, of Manning, Iowa,
was held Saturday, March 27, 1993, at 11:00 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in
Manning. Pastor Robert Riggert officiated the service
with Fern Jensen as organist, and Larry Genzen, vocalist. Honorary
casketbearers were Howard Vaughn, Jeff Hargens, and Dick Mundt. Burial will be held at a later date.
Harold, son of Gus and Bertha (Opperman) Vehrs, was born July 25, 1911, in Carroll County, Iowa. He attended country schools near his home.
Harold was united in marriage with Verna Grage on January 19, 1937. He did farm related work most of his life, and was custodian for the Manning Community Schools until he retired in 1976.
After retirement, he enjoyed travels to Alaska, Texas, and Europe. He also enjoyed fishing and playing horseshoes. Harold was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Manning.
In recent months Harold had been struggling with cancer. He died March 24, 1993, at Manning General Hospital in Manning.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Verna (Grage) Vehrs; his parents; brothers, Herb, Pete, and Edward; and sisters, Margaret Wegner, Helen Miller, and Ella Puck.
Harold is survived by five daughters: Mrs. Gene (Janice) Miskimins of Audubon, Mrs. Marvin (Lois) Miskimins of Omaha, Nebraska, Mrs. John (Rita) Winkelpleck of Grundy Center, Mrs. Eldon (Verna) Stracke of Perry, and Mrs. Robert (Cindy) Verkler of Fort Worth, Texas; two sons: Richard and his wife, Evelyn, of Seguin, Texas, and Larry and his wife, Nadya, of Anchorage, Alaska; two sisters: Viola Jensen of Audubon, Iowa, and Verna Olberts of Moline, Illinois; 23 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
Merle Hay Funeral Home in Des Moines, Iowa, was in charge of arrangements.
