Funeral services for Grant Wailes were held Saturday, April 4, 1981, at 1:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, Bayard, Iowa. Officiating was the Rev. Steven E. Wainwright. Music was by Miss Lula Garnes, and hymns were "Mansion Over the Hillside" and "Will There Be Any Stars In My Crown". Interment was in Highland Township Cemetery with Dennis R. Wailes, Dean Wailes, Rick Wailes, Dennis Wailes, Dean Imler and Billy J. Meister III as casketbearers.
Grant, son of Margaret Wailes, was born March 16, 1915, in Bayard, Iowa. He attended Bayard schools. On November 23, 1939, he was united in marriage with Mary Ellen Gardner at Bayard. Grant cared for his mother for many years as well as working as a section head for the Milwaukee Railroad. After receiving an injury that caused his retirement from the railroad, he worked as custodian for St. Patrick's Catholic Church, retiring in 1976.
He was preceded in death by his mother, and his wife, Mary Ellen, on September 12, 1977.
Grant has been in ill health for several years and died at his home on Wednesday, April 1, 1981, at the age of 66 years and 15 days.<
He is survived by the following cousins: Doris, Mrs. Ellsworth Shannon of Kirkman, Nellie, Mrs. Gilbert Hinners, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Bill Wailes of Napa, California, and Mrs. LaVerne Wailes of Boone; as well as by nieces and other relatives and friends.
