Glenn Rowedder
Glenn Henry, son of Henry and Christena (Joachimsen)
Rowedder, was born December 31, 1919, on a farm north of Aspinwall, Iowa. He
attended rural Crawford County schools. When Glenn was six, his father died
unexpectedly and Glenn began helping on the farm and at home.
On July 19, 1939, Glenn was united in marriage with Dorothy Petersen at the Presbyterian Manse in Manning. Four children were born to this union. In 1944, they began farming and raising Duroc hogs north of the Manning-Manilla Golf Course, where they lived for 25 years and raised their family. Glenn also did carpentry work part-time. In 1969, Glenn and Dorothy purchased a lot in south Manning and built a new home, moving to town in January of 1970. Glenn then worked as a full-time carpenter.
Glenn was a member of Manning United Methodist Church where he was honored to have built the altar cross for the new church in 1990. Throughout the years he enjoyed bowling, fishing and playing cards. He was a great follower of sporting events in which his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were participating. Glenn was especially appreciative of the neighbors, family and friends who took the time to pay him a visit.
On Tuesday, May 22, 2012, Glenn died at Manning Regional Healthcare Center in Manning, Iowa. He was ninety-two years of age.
Glenn is survived by his wife Dorothy Rowedder of Manning; four children: Karen Rowedder of Manning; Larry Rowedder and wife Nancy of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; Myra Lisk and husband Jim of Greenfield; and Allen Rowedder and wife Gretchen of Jefferson; Six grandchildren: Tammy Anderson; Michael Rowedder and wife Gina; Jackie Rowedder; Tracy Rowedder and wife Jennifer; Heather Lansman and husband Dean; Kristen Lisk and fiancee Clay Tarpley; Seven great-grandchildren: Jessica, Alli, Blake, Brody, Bailey, Morgan and Logan; one great-great-grandson Carlos; In-laws: Jan and Dick McConnell of Early; Harold and Patricia Petersen of Grimes and Grace Petersen of Marion; and by nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Glenn was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters: Elda Stuhr and Lanora Popp; and three brothers: Ruvilla, Ira, and Lyle Rowedder.
A Farmer's Hands
Hands that are large and tough
from years of rugged, outdoor work.
Hands with fingers sensitive to music, but too
thick to strike just one key on the piano,
or a single string on a violin.
Hands that are versatile, simultaneously wielding and ax
and swiping a fistful of pinch berries from a nearby bush.
Hands that clasp themselves habitually in
prayer-giving thanks for food, for rain, for
sun, for late frosts, early springs, good
yield, for soils, for health, for a newborn calf.
Hands that are strong, squeezing out a pailful of
milk in just no time, pulling strands of
barbed wire taut, carrying mountains of
hay and oceans of water to hungry, thirsty farm creatures.
Hands that are gentle, marveling at the softness
of a furry kitten, rescuing a killdeer's nest
from the path of the plow, patting the
shoulder of a disappointed child.
Hands that are inventive, twisting, pounding,
pinching, until a machine is fixed, shaping
an idea into something useful.
Hands that are tired for over a century of tilling,
Planting, weeding, harvesting.
Hands that we loved, a farmer's hands,
Our father's and our grandfather's.
