Funeral services for Gladys Mahnke were held Thursday, December 31, 1987 at 11:00 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. Pastor Robert Riggert officiated the service with Paula Weiss as organist. Interment was in Manning City Cemetery with Larry Mahnke, Glen Mahnke, Duane Mahnke, Randy Mahnke, Richard Mahnke and Donald Pfannkuch as casketbearers.
Gladys, daughter of Frank and Laura (Ewoldt) Hell, was born September 27, 1918, near Paullina, Iowa. She attended country schools and continued her education at Larrabee, Iowa. The family came to Manning in the early 1930s.
December 8, 1938, Gladys was united in marriage with Raymond Mahnke at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. After their marriage Gladys and Raymond farmed north of Manning and in February of 1968 they retired from the farm to a home in Denison. Ray died shortly after their move. The next year Gladys moved to Junction City, Kansas and in the early 70s returned to Iowa and made her home in Harlan. In a few years she moved back to Manning and has been a resident of the Elm Crest Apartments for the past couple of years. While in Manning Gladys was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and was active in the church ladies organizations.
Gladys died unexpectedly at her home at the Elm Crest Apartments Tuesday morning, December 29, 1987, at the age of 69 years, 3 months, and 2 days.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and by a brother-in-law, Alfred Mahnke.
Gladys is survived by her sister, Verna and her husband, Walter Bald, of Manning; by her brother, Dale Hell and his wife, Sue, of Junction City, Kansas; by three brothers-in-law, Herbert Mahnke and his wife, Inez, of Manning; Bill Mahnke and his wife, Luella, of Denison; and Leonard Mahnke and his wife, Hilda, of Denison; by a sister-in-law, Ann Mahnke, of Albert City; and by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
