Services Held For Mrs. R.G. Sutherland
"In the midst of life we are in death."
This was most forcibly brought to the minds of the people of Manning, when it became known that Mrs. R.G. Sutherland had suddenly passed this life on Thursday evening, January 4, at about eight o'clock at the Wyatt Memorial Hospital, where she had been a patient for about 12 days. The sad report was a distinct shock to the entire community, and another home is overshadowed with sorrow at the loss of one beloved.
Gertrude Sutherland, nee Timmerman, was born January 23, 1894, at Persia, Iowa, the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Timmerman. She came with her parents and two brothers, Henry and Fred Timmerman, to Manning when but a young girl. She attended school in Manning until she graduated.
In 1915 she was united in marriage to Mr. R.G. Sutherland, to which union two daughters were born: Dorothy, now a student at Coe College at Cedar Rapids, and Eleanor, at home, an eighth grade student in our public school.
Mrs. Sutherland attended the Presbyterian Church, was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, and the Progressive Study Club.
She is survived by her husband, R. G. Sutherland, the two daughters, Dorothy and Eleanor, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Timmerman, two brothers, Henry and Fred Timmerman, and many other relatives and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at the Ohde Funeral Home, with the Reverend. Alexander Wimberly, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Manning, and the Reverend E.E. Zimmerman, pastor of the Presbyterian Church of Vail and Westside officiating.
Short services were also held by Salona Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, with the Worthy Matron, Fredda Hinz, and the following officers taking part: Ila Rix, Helen Wyatt, Lorraine Lynn, Florence Rice, Esther Turpin, Bertha Hockett, Odessa Campbell and Harry Hinz. C.M. Johnson, accompanied at the organ by Mrs. Bonita Hagedorn, sang "Dear Lord, Forgive" and "Crossing The Bar".
Interment was made in the Manning cemetery, and as pallbearers acted Henry Hoffmann, Harry Hinz, John Reetz, L.L. Hockett, P.H. Jones, and E.E. Breckenridge.
Mrs. Sutherland had been ill for some time, but her condition had become serious only recently and she was taken from her home to the hospital on Christmas day. Her death was attributed to leukemia and complications. Everything possible had been done to restore her good health but in vain. Death called her at the age of 45 years, 11 months and 11 days. In countless numbers her friends came to pay their last respects to their departed friend.
We join them in extending our deepest sympathy to the family.
