Funeral services for Fred W. Stoffers, 85, of Arcadia, were held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday morning, May 8, at the United Church of Christ in Westside, with Rev. John McGee officiating. Burial was in the Westside Cemetery, with grandsons as pallbearers.
Son of Hans F. and Margareta (Buman) Stoffers, he was born November 17, 1882, in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. He came to the United States as a young man to live with an uncle, John Stoffers at Westside.
On March 4, 1909, he married Sophie Bauer at Arcadia. They farmed south of Westside until 1919, when they moved to a farm northwest of Arcadia. They retired to Arcadia in 1947. In failing health for six months, he entered the Manning Plaza on May 1, and died there early Monday morning, May 6.
Mr. Stoffers was a member of the United Church of Christ, Setting Sun Lodge No. 349 at Westside; an honorary member of the Hayes Township Schuetzen Verein, and was director of the Arcadia Township school board for many years.
He was preceded in death by a daughter in infancy; his parents, a brother, Hannes in 1946; seven sisters and brothers in Germany.
He is survived by his wife and six children: Mrs. Herbert (Regilda) Stribe, Manning, Mrs. Reynold (Henrietta) Hagge, Westside; Harry, West Islip, New York; Elmer, Westside; Henry, Arcadia, and Mrs. Ruby Hunter, Arcadia; 16 grandchildren; 15 great-grandmother, and a sister in Germany.
Setting Sun Lodge held a memorial service for Mr. Stoffers at 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7, at the Ohde Funeral Home here. The body was taken to the church at 9:00 on Wednesday morning.
