Evelyn Johanna, daughter of Charles and Maria (Passick) Schumann, was born January 29, 1911, near Manning, IA. She was baptized into the Lutheran faith on April 27, 1916, and was confirmed, as an adult, in 1956. Evelyn attended rural school near her home. After she finished her schooling, she worked for other families in their homes.
On February 6, 1929, Evelyn was united in marriage with Hugo Vollstedt in Carroll. Evelyn and Hugo farmed two years near Aspinwall, then nine years east of Manning. In 1940, they moved into Manning where Evelyn worked at Priebe’s Hatchery. She also worked at Ocoma Foods in Carroll and then as a cook at Manning Community School. Following her retirement from the school, Evelyn sorted corn at Garst & Thomas in Coon Rapids. She also did a lot of babysitting.
Evelyn was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Ladies Guild, and the VFW Auxiliary. She was an avid card player and loved to bake bread, can and cook. She especially loved to spend time with her family and friends.
On December 3, 1997, Evelyn became a resident of the Manning Plaza Nursing Home. She had an active life there until shortly before her death on Wednesday, June 27, 2001, at Manning Regional Healthcare Center in Manning. She was 90 years, 4 months and 29 days of age.
Besides her parents, Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband Hugo in 1964; an infant grandson Jerry Vollstedt; a great-granddaughter Elizabeth Hagge; brothers and sisters: Lillian Sander, Arnold Schumann, Eugene Schumann, Bernice Adams, Howard Schumann, and Charles Schumann Jr.
She is survived by four children: Dean Vollstedt and his wife Phyllis of Manning; Roger “Blackberry” Vollstedt and his wife Rosie of Manning; Carol and her husband Robert Hagedorn of Manning; Barbara and her husband Larry Horky of Sioux City; 17 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law: LaVonne Schumann of Ames; Betty Schumann of Sturgis, SD; Mabel Borkowski of Carroll; Edna Vollstedt of Manning; Kathryn Vollstedt of Manning; and by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
