Evelyn J. (White) Van Rossum was born on October 19, 1915, in Garden Grove, Iowa, the daughter of Elbert and Sarah White. Evelyn entered into eternal peace on Saturday, December 10, 2011, in Manning, Iowa, at the blessed age of 96 years.

Evelyn was the 4th child born of eight siblings. The family moved from Garden Grove to North English where Evelyn graduated from high school with the Class of 1933. She attended Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, where she earned a two-year degree in Education. In 1959 she graduated from Drake University in Des Moines with her Bachelors Degree.

In 1940 she was united in marriage to Gerald Haworth in Warren County, Iowa. The couple resided in the Indianola and Des Moines areas before Gerald’s passing. She later found happiness with her marriage to David W. Van Rossum on July 9, 1967, in Des Moines. The couple made their first home together in Des Moines, before moving to Shenandoah in 1980.

Evelyn’s teaching career began in Carlisle, where she taught for two years. She then served as a substitute teacher in the Des Moines school district before accepting a 7th grade Math position within the Johnston School District. She taught there from 1956 until her retirement in 1980.

She was an active member of the Shenandoah United Methodist Church, PEO, and the Shenandoah Hospital Auxiliary. Some of her hobbies included playing bridge, following Iowa Hawkeye Football, attending her grandchildren’s events, traveling, and keeping up on current events.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 23 years, Gerald Haworth; husband of 39 years, David Van Rossum; six siblings Philip (in infancy) Kenneth, Elizabeth, Alice, Stanley, and Allen.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter Sarah Lottridge and husband Ron of Manning; step-daughter Sandra Sapp and husband Ben of Norwalk; step-son Richard Van Rossum and wife Penny of Des Moines; 8 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; sister Mary Frye; many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and a host of friends.
