Evelyn A. Polking, 96, of Sioux City, formerly of Manning, Iowa, died in her sleep at Holy Spirit Retirement Home in Sioux City on Friday, May 16, 2003.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manning, with the Rev. James McAlpin officiating. She will be buried next to her husband, Larry, in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Manning. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 3 to 5 p.m. and 6:30 to 8 p.m., a Catholic Daughters of America, Court 1492, Our Lady of Fatima rosary at 4 p.m., and a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., all at Ohde Funeral Home in Manning.
Evelyn was born May 3, 1907, in Carroll, Iowa, to William and Rose Krueger. She lived in Auburn, Iowa, and graduated from high school there. She obtained a teaching degree from the University of Northern Iowa, formerly Iowa State Teachers College, and later taught at country and junior high schools in Auburn.
On June 10, 1935, she married Lawrence "Larry" H. Polking of Breda, Iowa. They moved to Manning, where he owned and operated Manning Oil Company. She was an accomplished pianist and was the church organist at Sacred Heart Catholic Church for 30 years. She gave piano, organ, reflexology and nutrition lessons.
She was a charter member of the Catholic Daughters of America and served as Grand Reagent. She was a member of the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women, Manning Toast Mistress Club, Little Flower Discussion Club and was an avid duplicate bridge player. She attended many Elderhostels and entertained everywhere with her sing-a-longs. Her lifetime hobby was doll making.
She is survived by her only child, Louise "Lou" Roach of Sioux City, and her husband, Ken Roach, D.V.M.; three grandchildren and their spouses, Leah and Steven Koonce of Memphis, Tennessee, Julie and Francois Buclez of Moscow, Russia, and John and Jennifer Roach of Greenwich, Connecticut; five great-grandchildren; a younger brother and his wife, Ed and Wilma Krueger of Lincoln, Nebraska; and four nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and two sisters, Leona Reardon and Marian Fahn.
Pallbearers will be Neil Polking, Norman Ludvig, Dr. Paul Fee, Douglas Polking, Dr. Gary Polking, Tom Polking, L.L.D., William Fahn and William Krueger.
Memorials may be directed to the Carmelite Monastery, Holy Spirit Retirement Home and Hospice of Siouxland, all in Sioux City.
