Eugene Otto, son of Charles and Mary (Passick) Schumann, was born January 1, 1915, in Manning, Iowa. He attended country school near his home.

On November 18, 1938, Hap was united in marriage with Margo Wilken in Maryville, Missouri. Two children were born to this union. After living for a brief time in Manson and Manning, the Schumanns returned to the Westside area, farming north of Westside. In 1968 they moved to Swan Lake State Park near Carroll and served as the park custodians for several years. After their retirement, the couple resided in Glidden and also had a winter home in Weslaco, Texas. Margo died January 22, 1998. In June of that year Hap moved into Terrace Apartments in Manning.

Hap enjoyed playing cards, fishing and visiting with his friends.

On Tuesday, December 14, 1999, Hap entered Manning Regional Healthcare Center in Manning, IA. He died rather unexpectedly following a brief illness on Thursday, December 16, 1999, at the age of 84 years, 11 months, and 15 days.

Besides his parents and wife, Hap is preceded in death by two sisters Lillian Sanders and Bernice Adams, and three brothers: Mike Schumann; Howard Schumann; and Charles Schumann, Jr.

He is survived by a daughter Linda and her husband Gerry Hamann of Turtle Lake, Wisconsin; a son Gary Schumann and his wife Kay of Clovis, California; four grandchildren: Kristin Schumann, Brian Hamann, Scott Hamann and Kelly Martin; five great-grandchildren; a sister Evelyn Vollstedt of Manning; two sisters-in-law Betty Schumann of Buffalo Center and LaVonne Schumann of Ames; and by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
