Esther A.A. Peters
Esther Augusta Amelia, daughter of August and Minnie (Noelck) Vetter, was born
October 5, 1906, in Washington Township, Carroll County, Iowa. She was baptized
at Zion Lutheran Church, Arcadia, on December 3, 1906. After completing her
schooling, she worked for various families in the area, caring for children and helping with the housework.
On April 19, 1938, Esther was united in marriage with Henry Peters at Yankton, South Dakota. She helped raise Henry's children after the untimely death of his first wife and she and Henry had two children of their own. They farmed near Westside for a short time then moved to Manning in 1940 where they owned and operated Peter's Tavern and Cafe "The Corner." Esther retired in 1979.
After her husband's death in 1982, Esther remained in their home on Second Street in Manning. In her spare time, Esther enjoyed all types of handiwork, cooking and baking, and playing cards. After her 90 birthday, she became a resident of the Manning Plaza Nursing Home and the next year of Black Hawk Life Care Center in Lake View. Esther had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease.
Esther died on Sunday, September 13, 1998, at Stewart Memorial Hospital, Lake City, after having been there for 10 days. She was 91 years 11 months, and 8 days of age.
Besides her husband, Esther was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers: August Jr., in infancy; Louis Vetter, and Frank Vetter; a sister Alice Young; brother-in-law Francis Young; and two stepsons, Ray Peters and Lester Peters.
She is survived by her children, Ron Peters and his wife Jen of Ames; Betty and her husband Donald Nobiling of Westside; a brother Paul Vetter of Manning; a sister Martha Vetter of Manning; a step-son Vernon Peters and his wife Vi of Wall Lake; a step-daughter Arlene Noack of Brownsville, Texas; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; eighteen step-great-grandchildren; five step-great-great-grandchildren; two step-daughters-in-law Georgene Peters of Harlan, and Nadine Nichols of Lake View; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
