Erna Bertha Margaret, daughter of William and Louise (Sievers) Wunder, was born March 10, 1907, in Crawford County, Iowa. Erna grew up in rural Crawford County where she attended rural school. Her family then moved into Manning where she worked at Rober-Wehrmann Department Store.

On April 26, 1929, Erna was united in marriage with Herbert Sander in Manning. Three children, Bill, Carol, and Burton, were born to this union. Erna and Herbert lived on a farm for a short time. They then moved into Manning where Erna worked at Rober-Wehrmann's, Valentine’s Bakery, Priebe & Sons, and then the Golden Rule. She loved people and working in retail sales. While in town, Erna and Herbert bought her mother's home and lived there over 50 years. Herbert died January 3, 1959. In 1993, Erna sold their home and moved into Willow Creek Apartments.

Erna was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Manning, participating in Women’s Group. She enjoyed working at the Senior Center as a volunteer, playing cards, doing crafts, crocheting, quilting, cooking and baking. She also enjoyed traveling with her family.

On November 11, 1999, Erna died unexpectedly at home in Manning. She reached the age of 92 years, and 8 months.

Besides her parents and husband, Erna is preceded in death by a brother Edwin Wunder, a sister Edna Phillips, and a great-grandson Neil Harding.

Erna is survived by three children: Bill Sander and his wife Marge of Altoona; Carol and her husband Merlene Thompson of Ralston, Nebraska; Burton Sander of Northridge, California; six grandchildren: Connie Harding; Tomas Thompson and his wife Debbie; Sheri Thompson; Donna Sander; Jannine Sander; Nancy Wasylik and her husband Todd; nine great-grandchildren; Josh and Nick Harding; Jennifer and Michael Thompson; Charlene, Catherine and Christian Sander; Shaylyn and Jairen Wasylik; as well as very special nieces, nephews, and many friends.
