Funeral services for Emma D. Saunders were held Thursday, February 29, 1992, at 2:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, Walnut, Iowa. Reverend Gerald Oliver officiated the service with music provided by the Presbyterian Church Choir with Mrs. Dennis Book as organist. Interment was held in the Walnut Cemetery, Walnut, Iowa with Kenneth Lappe, Jr., Wayne Sievers, Mark Beckendorf, Eric Larsen, Alvin Kohl and John Mitchell as casketbearers.

Emma Dorathea Saunders was born near Manilla, Iowa November 28, 1922. She was the daughter of Seigfred and Amanda (Kai) Wenzel. She was one of two children in the family. She attended country school through the 8th grade.

She was united in marriage to Howard Saunders on April 13, 1941, at Manilla, Iowa. They were the parents of three children. They farmed in the Manning and Manilla area until 1966. They moved to Storm Lake, Iowa in where they made their home until 1977 when they moved to Walnut. Howard passed away on April 27, 1983. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Walnut. Emma enjoyed being with her family and especially enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Music was an important part of her life and she enjoyed singing and playing the accordion. The family have many fond memories of her entertaining them with her gift of music. Emma was able to remain in her own home until January 24, 1992, when she became a resident of the Baptist Memorial Home in Harlan.

Emma entered the Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan February 5, 1992, where she passed away February 27, 1992. She had attained the age of 69 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Howard, and her one brother, Henry Wenzel. She leaves to mourn her passing her children: Betty and her husband, Darald Larsen, of Walnut, Peggy and her husband, Kenneth Lappe, of Casey, Iowa, and Terry Saunders and his wife, Shelly, of Harlan; ten grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and her friend, Warren Kohl, of Defiance, Iowa, besides other relatives and many friends.
