Many friends and relatives gathered Sunday afternoon at the Congregational Church to attend the funeral rites of Mrs. William Plahn, Sr., 76, long-time resident of this community. Mrs. Plahn passed away at her home last Tuesday noon, January 9, 1951, following a short illness. Rev. M.N. Knudson was in charge of the services at the home and at the church. He used as his text: "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death his saints," Psalm 23 and 116-15.
Music was, furnished by a quartet composed of Mr. and Mrs. Don Magdanz, Mrs. Harry Retzlaff, and William Chilvers, who sang, "Safe In The Arms of Jesus" and "The Old Rugged Cross." Miss Bernys Havel sang, "Whispering Hope." Mrs. L.D. Martelle was accompanist for the singing. Many beautiful floral offerings were placed about the casket, tributes to a loving wife and mother and friend of many members of the local chapter of the OES attended the services in a body.
Six grandsons, Melvin Miller, Arnold Altwine, of Pierce; Harvey Miller, Ogallala; Dale and Wayne Zauner of Tilden, served as pallbearers. Burial was in the Prospect View Cemetery.
Emma Koenekamp was born January 29, 1874, at Oblong, Illinois, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Koenekamp. She was married to William Plahn on October 6, 1896, at Denison, Iowa, and to this union six daughters and three sons were born. They made their home on a farm near Manning, Iowa, until 1910 when they moved to a farm south of Pierce. In 1926, they moved to Pierce where they have since made their home.
Mrs. PIahn was an active member of the Eastern Star and the Congregational Church.
She was preceded in death by three daughters, Mrs. Emil Karstens in 1921; Mrs. Emil Miller in 1947, Mrs. E.E. Miller in 1948, and three sisters.
Surviving to mourn her passing are her husband, William Plahn, Sr.; three sons, Herman, Pierce; Henry, Plainview; William Jr., Norfolk; three daughters, Mrs. Emil (Anna) Altwine, Pierce; Mrs. Harry (Anna) Zauner, Tilden; Mrs. Alfred (Emma) Settler, Richmond Hill, New York.
Also 25 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and three sisters, Mrs. Lena Niemann of California; Mrs. Bertha Richardson, Omaha, and Mrs. Clyde Newlove, Harlan, Iowa; five brothers, Chris, John, Bernard, and Hans, all of California; and Herman, Raymond, Washington. Among those coming from a distance to attend the last rites were Mr. and Mrs. Hans Koenekamp of Van Nuys, California; Mrs. Lena Niemann, Ocean Park, California; and Mrs. Clyde Newlove and son, HarIan, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Plahn, Carroll, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Harold Schroeder, Manning, Iowa; Mrs. Bertha Richardson of Omaha, and many relatives and friends from surrounding towns.
