Our community was rather shocked Sunday when the sad news spread of the sudden death of Mrs. Joachim Wiese of this city. Mrs. Wiese had been in fairly good health all her life, until a few days ago. She was reported as not being well the latter part of last week and the children gathered around her and were with her when she suddenly expired while sitting in the rocking chair, Sunday. The cause of her demise was old age and complications.
A good mother has been taken from us; a mother who enjoyed according a helping hand to those in need and distress. Wherever there was suffering among her neighbors, mother Wiese was always ready to do her utmost in bringing relief, and she did this willingly and cheerfully. She leaves a host of friends who mourn the death of their beloved neighbor and friend, and extend their deepest sympathy to the bereaved family.
Emma Leida, daughter of John B. Wunder and his wife Anna, was born in Friederichskoog, Dithmarschen, Germany, May 23, 1853. There were eight children in the family. A sister, Tessie Ranniger, passed away in 1886. Three brothers, Henry, Harm, and Detrick, died in Germany. Two brothers, Herman and John, passed away in the United States. Two brothers, Johannes and August, are still living.
At the age of eleven years she came to America with her parents and settled at Davenport, Iowa. In 1871 she was united in marriage to Joachim Wiese at Grand Mound, Iowa. To this union were born seven children: John, Gus, Catherine, Ben, Emil, May, and James, the latter having passed away on December 7, 1936.
The family moved to Manning in 1888 and lived on a farm north of the city until the husband and father passed away in 1911. Since that time Mrs. Wiese has been living in Manning.
