Emelie Martens, nee Vinke, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Vinke, was born in Hayes Township, Crawford County, Iowa, on March 5, 1886. She spent her childhood days with her parents on the farm, was educated in the rural schools and grew to young womanhood in the country she loved so well.
On May 30, 1906, she was united in marriage to Mr. Detlef Martens Jr., which union was blessed with three children: two sons Gilbert and Lewis, and one daughter Leora, Mrs. Elmer Popp, who are left, besides the bereaved husband and father to mourn the death of the beloved wife and mother. She is survived by 2 grandchildren, two brothers John and Detlef Vinke of Manning; three sisters, Mrs. Dora Grimm of Manning, Mrs. Laura Welch of Omaha, and Mrs. Julia Thiedeman of Westside. Her parents and three brothers, Gustav, Henry and Julius preceded her in death. Julius gave his life for his country in the world war.
The deceased became afflicted with heart trouble about three years ago, since then receiving the best of care that medical skill and human hands could offer, in hospitals and at home, but to no avail. She suddenly passed away on Wednesday, March 21, 1934 at her home six miles northwest of Manning at the age of 48 years and 16 days. She was compelled to remain in bed and rest a few days prior to her passing, and her family and friends were unaware that the end was so near. The sad report of her untimely demise spread a pall of gloom over the community.
She spent her entire married life on the place where she closed her eyes forever. It was her dear home where she toiled and spread love and sunshine ever since the day she vowed to be a wife and mother, which mission she filled so splendidly. More than that, she had gained a host of friends who loved and admired her for her womanly traits and noble character. She will be greatly missed by all of them as well as by the family where there is a vacant place that cannot be filled.
The Funeral services were held Saturday, March 23, 1934 at 2 o'clock in the afternoon in the Lutheran church, the Rev. Johann M. Ansorge, pastor of the church, conducting the services. Interment was made in the Manning Cemetery attended by a large concourse of relatives and friends who paid their last respects to the beloved departed neighbor.
As pall bearers acted Alfred Rix, W.E. Sander, Emil Martens, H.W. Frahm, John Rowedder and Claus Rohde.
