Emil Tollgaard, resident of Moody County since 1910, died at his home in Riverview Township after a lingering illness, on Saturday, July 6, 1940, at 12:15 p.m.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the farm home, with the Rev. G J. Steinmeyer, pastor of Immanuel Lutheran Church of Pipestone, Minnesota, conducting the service. Interment was made in the Union Cemetery at Flandreau, South Dakota. Pallbearers were Walter Parsley, Henry Pulscher, Ed Stammer, Henry Meyer, William Meyer, and Conrad Koester.
Tollgaard was born in Schleswig, Germany, on March 28, 1867, and at the time of his death had reached the age of 73 years, 2 months and 8 days. He was baptized and confirmed in Germany, and came to the United States at the age of 17 years to remain as a citizen ever since.
He was married to Tena Ehrichs at Denison, Iowa, on June 10, 1892. They lived on a farm at Manning, Iowa, until 1910 when they came to Moody County. In the year 1920 he gave up farming and moved into Flandreau, where he lived fourteen years, then returned to his farm to remain the rest of his life.
He is survived by his wife and three children: Henry, of Ward, South Dakota; Mrs. William (Anna) Schmidt and Mrs. Louie (Marie) Hammer, of Flandreau South Dakota. One brother, Louis, lives at Flandreau, South Dakota, and a sister, Alvina, at Fremont, Nebraska. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren.
Relatives and friends from distant points who came to attend the funeral services Monday included Mr. and Mrs. Benard Ehrichs and son, Halstad, Minnesota; Mr. and Mrs. John Ehrichs, their daughter and a granddaughter, Norfolk, Nebraska; Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Ehrichs and August, Manilla, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Emil Ehrichs, Mr. and Mrs. Louie Ehrichs, Herman Ehrichs, Aspinwall, Iowa; Mrs. Hugo Brus, Manning, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Ed Kuhl, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Jahn, Mrs. Ed Mordhorst and Emil Carstensen, Owanka, South Dakota; and Amanda Wunder, Walnut Grove, Minnesota.
