Elvia Elsie, daughter of John and Ida (Puck) Struve, was born July 18, 1911, in Manning, Iowa. She grew up near Manning and attended school at Ewoldt No. 6. Following her schooling, Elvia worked at home.
On November 24, 1931, Elvia was united in marriage with Elmer Richards in Albion, NE. Three children were born to this union. They farmed in the Manning area and in 1945 purchased a farm east of Manning. Elvia and Elmer retired and moved to town shortly before Elmer’s death in 1973. Elvia continued to reside in their home on Third Street until 1996 when she moved to Huntsville, AL, to be near her children.
Elvia was a member of Shilo Methodist Church in Huntsville and the Who Club. She enjoyed playing the organ and piano, playing cards and whistling.
In 2000, Elvia became a resident of Whitesburg Gardens Retirement Home in Huntsville, AL, where she died on Friday, January 10, 2003, at the age of 91 years, 5 months and 23 days.
Elvia was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
She is survived by three children: Dr. Robert E.A. Richards and wife and Dr. William A. Richards and wife, all of Huntsville, AL; Joyce Richards Vento and husband of Brooklyn, NY; grandchildren: Carrie Byrne and husband; Curtis Richards and wife; Clayton Richards and wife; Carla Brown and husband; Billie Spradley and husband; Dr. Jacquelyn Sargeant and husband; Holly Richards; Marie Vento Racos and husband; Frank Vento; great grandchildren: Patrick, Tyler, Emily and Blaine Richards; David Tate; Christy Tate; Taylor Spradley; Allison and Colin Sargeant; Claudia and Nicholas Racos; and other relatives and friends.
