Elsie A.C. Wilhelm
Elsie Anna Catherina, daughter of Ed and Lena (Jahn) Kuhl, was born April 12, 1906, in Iowa Township, Crawford County, Iowa. She was baptized later that same year, on August 21, by Pastor J.M. Ansorge at her parent's home. On June 12, 1921, she was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church.

Elsie attended rural schools in Crawford County and graduated from Manning High School with the class of 1922. She taught rural school and Aspinwall schools for four years. After teaching, she and Genevieve Miller also taught Sunday School with Pastor John M. Ansorge at the Aspinwall school and a Hayes Township Rural School for several years on Sunday afternoons.

On December 19, 1929, Elsie was united in marriage with Hugo Wilhelm. Two daughters were born to this union. They lived on several farms in Crawford County for 35 years, after which time they went into the motel business at Ames and Sioux City until 1970, when they retired to a new home in south Manning. Hugo died on February 12, 1996.

Elsie was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and a member of the Ladies Guild.

In September of 1992, Elsie entered the Manning Plaza Nursing Home in Manning and died there on Saturday, July 24, 1999, at the age of 93 years, 3 months, and 12 days.

Besides her husband, Elsie is preceded in death by her parents; a sister Melvina Vollstedt; two brothers: Herbert and Marvin Kuhl; and one great-grandchild Jonathan Peters.

Elsie is survived by two daughters: Lois and her husband Dan Peters of Manning; Joann and her husband John Pratt of Becker, Minnesota; nine grandchildren: Glynis Pratt Caton; Michael Peters; Gail Pratt Tracy, Mark Peters; Julie Peters Rabbitt; Linda Pratt Sharkey; Jeffrey Peters; Gregory Peters; and Lisa Pratt Hankey; sixteen great-grandchildren; a brother Marcus Kuhl of Denison; a sister Kathryn Vollstedt of Manning; and a number of other relatives and friends.


Elsie Wilhelm is buried in the Manning Cemetery.
