Mr. Elmer Johannes Stoffers, age 86, of Carroll, Iowa, died at the St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll on October 19, 2001. A son of Fred and Sophie (Bauer) Stoffers, he was born on February 22, 1915, at Rural Westside, Iowa. He was baptized in October of 1915 at the United Church of Christ in Westside as an infant and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith on April 4, 1947, at Zion Lutheran Church by Pastor Theodore Tews. He attended rural Carroll County Schools. He and Louise Ossenkop were married on March 14, 1940, at the Lutheran Parsonage in Manning, Iowa, by Pastor John M. Ansorge. Elmer was a life-long farmer having farmed north of the Westside area most of his life. The Stoffers were long-time members of the Zion Lutheran Church in Arcadia where Elmer had served as elder and had served on the Church Board. He was also a member of the Verein Schuetzen in Hayes Township at Westside, Iowa, and the Westside School board during the re-organization to the Ar-We-Va Community Schools. He had also worked as a volunteer for New Hope Village for several years. He retired from farming in 1981 and the Stoffers moved to Carroll. They then became members of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Carroll.
Survivors include his wife Louise Stoffers of Carroll, Iowa; a son Roger Stoffers and his wife Carlene of Fremont. California; two daughters: Annette Phillips and her husband James of Roseville, California, and Anita Buescher and her husband John of Folsom, California; five grandchildren: Tracy Phelps, Stephen Lewis, Erin Phillips, Matthew Buescher, and Timothy Buescher. Also surviving are a sister Ruby Hunter of Westside, Iowa and a brother Henry Stoffers and his wife Blondina of Carroll, Iowa.
Elmer was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters: Henrietta Hague and Regilda Stribe and a brother Harry Stoffers.
