Elmer Otto
Elmer Charley, son of Carl Reinhart and Catherina
Wilhelmina (Hass) Otto, was born September 24, 1920, in Iowa Township, Crawford
County, Iowa. He was baptized November 21, 1920, in Aspinwall, and was
confirmed April 2, 1939, at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. He attended
country school in Crawford County. After his schooling, Elmer farmed with his parents and worked as a carpenter.
On March 17, 1943, Elmer was united in marriage with Myrtle Louise Hagedorn at Zion in Manning. Two children were born to this union. On their farm northwest of Aspinwall, Elmer enjoyed working with livestock and watching his crops grow.
In 1991, Elmer and Myrtle moved into Manning after 47 years on the farm. In November of 1997, Elmer entered St. Anthony Nursing Home in Carroll, and in June of 1998, he moved to the Manning Plaza. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and playing cards. He especially enjoyed visits from friends and relatives. Elmer greatly cherished his grandchildren.
Elmer had been in failing health since suffering a stroke in 1997, and on February 2, 1999, Elmer was admitted to St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll where he died the same day. He reached the age of 78 years, 4 months and 8 days.
Besides his parents, Elmer was preceded in death by two brothers: Heinie Otto and his wife Viola, and William Otto; six brothers-in-law: Rudy Malone, Walter Dammann, Lorn Hagedorn, Lewis Hagedorn, Alvin Hagedorn and his wife Norma Jean, and Ernest Grimm.
He is survived by his wife Myrtle Otto of Manning; a daughter Joyce and her husband Gary Vinke of Aspinwall; a son Duane Otto and his wife Kay of Manning; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers: Louie Otto and his wife Dalores, and Bennie Otto and his wife Geniece, all of Manning; two sisters: Malinda Dammann of Manilla and Milda Malone of Carroll; three sisters-in-law: Elberta Grimm and Marie Hagedorn of Manning, and Irene Otto of Spencer; and by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
