Ella W. Steen
Funeral services for Ella Wilhelmina Steen will be held Thursday, May 14, 1998, at 10:30 a.m. at United Methodist Church in Manning, Iowa. Reverend Larry McAlpine of Manning will officiate the service with Carolyn Miller as vocalist and Janet Myer as organist. Interment will be held in Manning Cemetery, Manning, Iowa, with grandchildren and great-grandchildren as casket bearers. Visitation will be held after 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday at Ohde Funeral Home in Manning, Iowa.

Ella, daughter of Frederick and Amanda (Asmus) Gruhn, was born December 28, 1898, on the family farm in Carroll County, Iowa. She attended rural schools and then completed dressmaking school in Manning. Before her marriage, she was an accomplished seamstress, working for others and sewing for all the members of her family.

On September 22, 1920, Ella was united in marriage with Grover Steen at the Lutheran parsonage in Manning. Two daughters were born to this union. Grover and Ella farmed in Crawford and Shelby Counties until 1948 when they moved into Manning. Ella was a homemaker and enjoyed sewing for her daughters. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, WSCS, American Legion Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary and Pastime Club. In her spare time she enjoyed playing cards, gardening and shell crafting.

After her husband's death in 1973, Ella remained in their home until January of 1995, when she became a resident of the Manning Plaza Nursing Home. She died there on Sunday, May 10, 1998, at the age of 99 years, 4 months, and 10 days.

Besides her husband, Ella was preceded in death by her parents; daughter Velma Kruse in 1981; sisters: Emma, in infancy, Lena Jansen, Alma Custer, Frieda Langbehn, and Anna Mahnke; brothers; Ed Gruhn and Henry Gruhn.

Ella is survived by her daughter Betty and her husband, Merlin Welch, of Florida; a son-in-law, Robert Kruse and his wife, Mary; six grandchildren: Gwen Gerber, Patricia McNeely, Michelle Welch, Lynn Kruse, Shary Arkfeld, and Luanne Sandvik; Fourteen great-grandchildren: Courtney and Jason Gerber, Michael, Jess, and Chris McNeely, Benjamin and Nicholas Welch-Bolen, and Jasmine Welch-Beardsley, Aaron, Andy, Laura, and Elizabeth Arkfeld, Jesse and Chelsea Sandvik; two great-great-grandchildren: Allison Elizabeth and Ella Ruth McNeely; two sisters: Ida and her husband Gilmer Anthony of Manning, and Helen Andersen of Denison; nieces, nephews; other relatives and friends.
