ELLA BARBARA SCHADE

Funeral services for Ella Barbara Schade were held Monday, March 12, 1990, at 10:30 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church, Manning, Iowa. Pastor Robert Riggert officiated with music by Paula Weiss, organist. Interment was in the Manning City Cemetery. Casketbearers were Bary Kienast, Leland Kienast, Art Kuhn, Ron Hodne, Ralph Grundmeier, and Marvin Bruch. Honorary casketbearers were Hugo Dammann, William Dammann, Hugo Ress, Eddie Fischer, Leroy Dammann, Emil Ress, and George Fischer.

Ella Barbara, daughter of Fritz and Wilhelmina (Duwe) Fischer, was born November 6, 1895, on the family farm in Lincoln Township, Audubon County, Iowa. She attended country school until age 15.

January 24, 1917, Ella was united in marriage with Harry Peter Schade of Manilla, Iowa. They made their home in Aspinwall for a short time, moving to a farm south of Manning in 1918. In 1929 they moved to Manning where Harry was employed by the Manning Creamery Company. In 1940 Ella's husband suffered a stroke that left him partially paralyzed; Ella took care of him at home for many years. She worked at Hansen-Pahde for a time and then was employed at Manning General Hospital for 20 years.

Ella made her home in Manning with her granddaughter, Barbara, her husband, Larry and their daughters, Patty, Jackie, and Joelle.

Ella had been in failing health this winter, and died at her home in Manning Thursday morning, March 8, 1990, at the age of 94 years, 4 months, and 2 days.

She was preceded in death by her parents; by her husband in 1961; by a great-grandson, Richard Smith; by two brothers, Henry Fischer and August Fischer; and by five sisters: Anna Ress, Lucy Fischer, Ida Dammann, Dora Dammann, and Emma Fischer in infancy.

Ella is survived by her daughter, Luella, and her husband, Merle Knight, of Edmonds, Washington; by three granddaughters: Barbara and her husband, Larry Handlos, of Manning; Dorothy and her husband, Dean Smith, of Lacy, Washington; and Cathy and her husband, Scott Davis, of Corona, California; by five great-grandchildren; Patty and her husband, Skip Tanner, of Sheldon; Jackie and her husband, Mark Werner, of Carroll; Joelle Handlos, of Manning; Randy Smith and his wife, Tami, of Lacy, Washington; and Lisa Smith, of Lacy, Washington; by a great-great-grandson, Nicholas Tanner; by a brother Herman Fischer, of Manning; and by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Despite her age, Ella maintained an active life. She was an avid card player and enjoyed being a member of several card clubs. She also enjoyed playing bingo and going fishing with her family and friends. Ella was a life-long member of the Lutheran Church, serving as church organist at the old Lutheran Church on Second Street in Manning.
