Mrs. Elizabeth Smith passed away at 10:20 Friday morning, April 28, 1961, at the Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She was 94 years, 1 month, and 24 days of age.
Mrs. Smith lived in this community for forty years, going to Sioux Falls in 1955.
She is the mother of Mrs. Waitstill Burnside of Lake Park.
Born on March 4, 1867, at Tamworth, England, she was one of five daughters and two suns of William and Mary Cope. When 28 years of age Elizabeth came by herself to the United States and to Manning, Iowa, where the day after her arrival, April 23, 1895, she was married to her fiancée, Thomas Smith, who came to this country in 1893.
The young couple farmed near Manning, and it was here that their three daughters were born: Gladys, Elsie, and Evelyn.
In 1915, the family moved to their farm 4 1/2 miles southwest of Lake Park that was their home until after Mr. Smith's death in 1948.
Mrs. Smith was an excellent mother and homemaker, and the welfare of her family was always close to her heart. After her own children were grown into young womanhood, she provided a home for three grandchildren, Robert, Gladys, and Shirley Smith, as long as she remained on the farm. She was a true help-mate, and she and her husband labored long and hard in their early years to meet the goals of their ambition.
Mrs. Smith was a member of the Church of England, and always remained steadfast to that religion. However, she was a contributing member of the Lake Park Presbyterian Church, and it was in this church that her children had their religious training.
Mr. and Mrs. Smith observed their golden wedding on the home farm in 1945.
After Mr. Smith's death on April 16, 1948, Mrs. Smith remained on the farm until the autumn of 1949, when she bought a residence property in Lake Park and moved here.
In 1955, Mrs. Smith went to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to make her home with her daughter Mrs. Charles Irwin, and she lived there until her death from the infirmities of old age.
Surviving to mourn her passing are the three daughters: Elsie, Mrs. Waitstill Burnside of Lake Park; Evelyn, Mrs. E.O. Henning, and Gladys. Mrs. Charles Irwin, both of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Also six grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren. A sister Mrs. Sam Shakespeare of Tamworth, England, is believed to be the only one living of her sisters and brothers in England. Her parents passed away some years ago.
Funeral services were held Monday morning, May 1 at 10 o'clock at the Lake Park Presbyterian Church with Pastor Rev. Marvin Kruse, officiating. Mrs. Allan McClain was the soloist, and sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" accompanied by Mrs. Marvin Kruse.
Pallbearers were Howard Burnside, Robert Smith, Leonard Jansen, Marvin Titus, Dale Burnside, and Bill Bruett.
Interment was in Silver Lake Cemetery at Lake Park beside her husband.
