Eleanora A. Volquartsen
Mass of Christian Burial for Eleanora A. Volquartsen was held Friday, February 20, 1998, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Laurence Catholic Church in Scribner, Nebraska. Father Bill L. Heureux was the celebrant with Lillian Kassmeier as organist. Casket bearers were Joe Volquartsen, Tom Leghand, Patrick Volquartsen, Tim Kruger, Bobbie Reynolds and Dennis Gordon. A prayer service was held on Thursday evening, February 19, at the funeral home. Spear Johnson of Scribner, Nebraska was in charge of arrangements. Graveside service will be held in Mustang, Oklahoma.
On Tuesday, February 17, 1998, Eleanora died at the Fremont Area Medical Center in Fremont, Nebraska.
Eleanora, daughter of Daniel Patrick Murphy and Anna Schwaller Murphy, was born August 17, 1914, in Stone City, Iowa. She attended Manning High School.
On June 8, 1935, she was united in marriage to Carl Volquartsen in Manning, Iowa, by Father J. Keane at the Catholic Rectory. Eleanora was a member of the St. Laurence Catholic Church in Scribner and a past member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles in Omaha.
Eleanora was employed by a casket manufacturer in Omaha during World War II. She and her husband then owned a dry cleaning business called Bandbox Cleaners in Omaha. Later she worked as a "marker" in the Brandie's stores distribution center. She returned to the dry cleaning business and selfservice laundry as an employer. She retired in 1962 from this job.
She lived in Manning from the time she was married until moving to Omaha in the early 1940's. She then moved to Graham, Oregon, from there to Mustang, Oklahoma and since 1993, she has lived in Scribner, Nebraska.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband on January 9, 1985; one granddaughter, Suzanne Gordon; and one grandson, Sean Volquartsen.
She is survived by a daughter, Patricia, and her husband, Carl Gordon of rural Hooper, Nebraska; two sons: Daniel of Omaha, Nebraska and David and his wife, Susan Volquartsen, of Red Oak, Iowa; three sisters: Launette Reynolds of Bellevue, Nebraska, Marjorie Schlucter of Omaha, Nebraska and Mary Fry of Bellevue; ten grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many friends.
