Edward Signall
DEATHS OF A WEEK.
MR. EDWARD SIGNALL.
In the death of Mr. Edward Signall, which occurred at his late home in Manning on
Tuesday, March 13, 1900, this city loses one of its most honorable and highly respected
citizens. Mr. Signall had been a continual sufferer for several years with diseased lungs
and cancer of the throat, but he had never been compelled to take to his bed until some
three weeks ago, from which time until death the patient suffered terrible agony, having to
gasp for breath of life continually.
Edward Signall was born 57 years ago the 1st day of last January in the city of Bristol, England. At the age of eleven years he came with his parents to this country, settling on a farm near the old town of Dixon, Illinois, where, in 1865, he was joined in marriage to Ann McCann. Mr. Signall and wife came to Carroll County more than 20 years ago.
They settled on a farm three miles northeast of this city, where they resided and toiled until in the fall of 1896, when, having acquired a sum sufficient to retire on, they moved into town. Mr. Signall was the parent of 9 children: three of whom preceded him to the grave and 6 survive him, namely, George, Robert, James, Charles, Philip, and Miss Nellie.
The funeral was held yesterday at 10 a.m. from the Catholic Church, the Father M.M. Tierney, assisted by Father Schlyer of Carroll and Father McCullan of Coon Rapids, conducting the Solemn High Mass, and the members of that church with whom the deceased had bowed in worship before the shrine were there to pay their last respects, as were also many others. Following the services, the remains were conveyed to the Catholic Cemetery where interment took place.
Mr. Signall was at the time of his death a member of the board of education, and for this reason the city schools were closed during the forenoon, as were also all business houses during the services.
In this, their time of affliction the widowed mother and her children have the sympathy of all.
