Edward Bernard, son of John and Clara Lechtenberg Sextro, was born April 17, 1923 at Butte, Nebraska. At the age of four years he moved to Manning, Iowa with his parents and siblings. Ed received his education at rural schools near his home northeast of Manning.

On February 20, 1943, Ed was inducted into the U.S. Army and was a heavy truck driver in the Southern Philippines. He was honorably discharged on January 9, 1946, and received a bronze star, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, and World War II Victory Medal. Upon his return to Manning, Iowa in 1946 he continued his life-long love of farming the land. In addition, he raised cattle and hogs. Ed was a life time member of Sacred Heart Church in Manning, as well as a member of the Templeton Knights of Columbus and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. In his spare time he enjoyed spending time with his family and traveling, golfing, bowling, playing cards and attending service reunions.

After his semi-retirement, Ed remained on his farm until he became a resident of the Manning Plaza Nursing Home in October of 2009. He died there on Monday, December 27, 2010, at the age of 87 years, 8 months and 10 days.

Ed is preceded in death by his parents; siblings and in-laws Edna Sextro, Maxine Meier, Helen and Joe Lampe, Herb Sextro, and Leon Masching; niece Teresa (Sextro) Buffington and nephew Thomas Vanderheiden.

He is survived by three sisters Marie Sextro, Dorothy Masching, and Ruth Vanderheiden, all of Carroll; three brothers Leo Sextro of Manning; Leonard Sextro and his wife Dolores of Manning and Norbert Sextro and his wife Dora of Surprise, Arizona; in-laws Janet Sextro of Carroll and Warren and Rosemary Meier of Omaha, Nebraska; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Final Harvest
He was bound to the land from the day of his birth
His roots anchored deep in the fertile earth.
Nurtured, sustained; by the soil he grew
And his life, like his furrows, ran straight and true.
In faith, each spring, he planted the seeds
In hope, to again, reap for his needs.
With patience, he waited for the harvest to come
To gather the fruits of his labor home.
Ever turning seasons, the years sped past
Tiff the final- harvest came at fast.
Then claimed anew by beloved sod
He was gathered home to be with God

Poem by Craig "Spitter" Moeller for Ed

ED
When I first heard about it
Eddie Sextro passed away
Imagined the courses in HEAVEN
That he would now get to play

His old friends will be there
To play with him, they cant wait
Might not hit them very far
But he sure will hit them straight

Eddie led a good long life
Was an example for us all
When his Country needed him
He proudly answered the call

Gentleman, farmer & neighbor
The person we all should be
He has touched many lives
I'm just happy one was me
